Barack Obama (2009 – Present): President Obama is adamantly pro-choice. As a U.S. Senator, he received a 100% voting rating from the National Abortion Rights Action League. Conversely, pro-life groups say that he is the “most pro-abortion President” in our history. Below is a summary of his position on certain abortion-related issues:
He vigorously supports the Roe v. Wade decision and every January 22, the anniversary of the Roe decision, he has issued a statement reaffirming his support for that decision;
On January 23, 2009 he issued an Executive Order overturning the “Mexico City Policy” which required that U.S. assistance for overseas birth control programs be provided only to organizations that did not “perform or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning.”
On March 9, 2009 he signed an executive order allowing taxpayer funding of embryonic stem cell research. In a statement he said that “we owe it to the American public to explore the potential of stem cells to treat the millions of people suffering from debilitating and life threatening diseases.”
In his proposed budgets, President Obama has eliminated all federal funding for abstinence-only education;
The President became embroiled in the debate over his healthcare bill when anti-abortion groups claimed that the bill required the government to pay for abortions. The words “abortion” or “reproductive health” are not found in the law but the problem was that while the bill did not specifically say the government would pay for abortions, it also did not say it wouldn’t. To allay the concerns of pro-life Democrats, on March 24, 2010 he signed an Executive Order designed to ensure that current law limiting federal funding for abortion was maintained and it will extend the restrictions to the newly created health insurance exchanges;
He has nominated two pro-choice justices to the U.S. Supreme Court
